Brewers' Hare Raising Adventures
We are relatively new to raising rabbits. We purchased our first rabbits in September of 2008. Since then, we have constructed cages, and built racks for holding cages, turning our portable garage in to a full fledged rabbitry. Our herd typically fluctuates between about 10 and 40 animals, depending on how many litters we have.
Our goal is to raise rabbits for both pets and for food. Rabbit meat is one of the most nutritious meats available and is easy to raise, especially in comparison to larger meat animals such as sheep or cattle.
This has also been a learning experience for our children. They have been learning responsibility, as they are responsible for the primary care of the rabbits. They are also learning about animal production and husbandry. We intend to use the rabbits as an ongoing “science project” since we are home schooling our three children.
We hope to continue to add to our herd, at least until we run out of space. Currently we will be hampered by tight quarters, but someday, we may decide to expand to a larger setting. Our goal is to maintain around 5 breeding does, and produce enough rabbits to supply ourselves and some friends with meat, and to sell a few as the opportunity arises.
Recently, we expanded into Rex rabbits. Rex rabbits are a duel purpose rabbit, large enough to be a good meat producer, and an excellent coat for pelts. We are hoping to start tanning our own hides as another commodity produced by the rabbits. The Rex breed also have a good temperament, making them excellent pets. Rex rabbits are not very plentiful in our area, so we are hoping to be able to develop a market for them. Our children are hoping to be able to start showing at local fairs in our area sometime in the next couple of years.
If you are interested in purchasing a rabbit, we have very reasonable rates. Be sure to check out our “For Sale” page to see what is currently available.
